Chapter Fourteen
Max worried about Olivia going out with Quinn and Ashley. She hoped she'd taken her warning seriously, but Olivia was such a trusting soul, she'd probably never suspect one of her friends of doing something so terrible.
After the short walk home, Max decided to stop in to see her dad. If he happened to have leftovers, that was just a bonus.
She walked through his front door without knocking as usual. She frowned. He was always telling her to be careful, but he'd left his front door unlocked. Sheâd have to talk to him about that.
âDad?â She called out, but didnât get an answer. She found him in the courtyard that separated his house from the garage and her apartment above it. He was watering the plants she had been ignoring. The wilted hydrangeas seemed to perk up with the attention. Sparrows chirped loudly in the shrubs that stood against the fence.
âHi, sunshine,â he said when he saw her step out the back door. âHow was your day?â
âFine,â she said. âA bit surreal in a way. Brides kept dropping in wanting wedding gowns in a rush. I donât know if Iâll be able to help them.â
âWhy are they dropping in all of a sudden?â
âAntoineâs Bridal has declared bankruptcy and isnât delivering wedding gowns that have been ordered.â
âThey canât expect you to work miracles,â he said.
âWell, apparently they do. I just feel so bad for them. Iâd like to help if I can.â
âWould you turn the water off?â he asked. âIâm sure youâll think of something. Youâre resourceful. And you love helping people.â
âI really do,â Max admitted. It was the favorite part of her job.
She didnât mention the murder or her suspicions. Her tendency to get involved in murder investigations did not sit well with him. She knew he wanted his daughter to be safe, and she didnât want him to worry, so sometimes the less he knew the better. And she certainly wasn't going to tell him about Lori stopping by. She'd never confided in him about her feelings for Jason.
âI was about to make myself a grilled cheese," he said, winding the hose up and hanging it back on the wall. "Want one?â
âThanks, Dad. Iâd love one.â He made the best buttery grilled cheese sandwiches. âWhy donât we eat out here? Itâs turning into a lovely evening.â
She and her father had become closer after her mother passed away, and she didnât know what sheâd do without him. Go hungry a lot of the time, for starters.
"So you decided to take a break from painting and do some gardening?" she asked, following him back inside.
"I took a break from doing the books. I never realized how much work the business side of painting involved. Your mother took care of all of that for me. I'm just not a numbers person." He got the bread and cheese out of the refrigerator and started making their sandwiches. Max poured them both a glass of lemonade, then sat down and watched him fry up their dinner.
